The Role of Vitamin D in Small Animal Bone Metabolism

Abstract: Dogs and cats have differences in vitamin D metabolism compared to other mammalian species, as they are unable to perform vitamin D cutaneous synthesis through sun exposure. Therefore, they are dependent on the dietary intake of this nutrient. The classic functions of vitamin D are to stimulate intestinal calcium and phosphate absorption, renal calcium and phosphate reabsorption and regulate bone mineral metabolism. Thus, it is an important nutrient for calcium and phosphorus homeostasis. This review highlight… Show more

“…Metabolomics can be applied to assess the therapeutic effect of drugs or dietary supplements on the recovery of an OP disorder. The effect of dietary Vitamin D on the bone metabolism of cats and dogs has been well reviewed [ 109 ]. The Icariin (IC) potential, a Chinese herbal bioactive molecule, in inducing bone differentiation has been proved previously [ 110 , 111 ].…”

“…Der Haupteffekt des Calcitriols ist die Aufrechterhaltung der Kalzium- und Phosphatkonzentration im Blut durch eine gesteigerte Knochenresorption 7 . Calcitriol stimuliert die Reabsorption von Kalzium und Phosphat an der Niere und fördert zudem die intestinale Kalziumaufnahme 5 , 7 .…”

“…Vitamin D must be supplemented with the diet since puppies and kittens cannot convert dehydrocholesterol in the skin to a more active form of vitamin D [ 27 ]. In addition to calcium absorption, in the intestine, vitamin D also acts on phosphate absorption, influencing bone growth, mineralization and remodeling [ 28 ]. Calcium-phosphorus ratio is generally stable over time in a bitch’s colostrum and milk (1.5) and rises from colostrum to milk in queens [ 23 ].…”
