The role of vitamin D in skeletal and cardiac muscle function

Abstract: Myopathy is a feature of many inflammatory syndromes. Chronic inflammation has been linked to pathophysiological mechanisms which implicate 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2D3)-mediated signaling pathways with emerging evidence supporting a role for the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in contractile and metabolic function of both skeletal and cardiac muscle. Altered VDR expression in skeletal and cardiac muscle has been reported to result in significant effects on metabolism, calcium signaling and fibrosis in thes… Show more

“…Data analysis was performed on natural logarithmic transformed values. 15 Data were adjusted for age, gender, race-ethnicity, BMI, physical activity, and smoking status, as well as for interactions between age and BMI; gender and BMI; gender and smoking status; and BMI and physical activity. Data analysis was performed on natural logarithmic transformed values.…”

“…VDRs, found on both the cell and nuclear membranes [3,4], have an influence through genomic and non-genomic pathways in the function and structure of cardiomyocytes and cardiovascular system cells [115,116]. It has also been reported that within this broad group of receptors, certain polymorphisms can be used as predictors for developing left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with end stage kidney disease [117] or other diseases, such as Gaucher’s variant heart disease [118].…”

“…The positive effects of vitamin D supplementation on muscle strength, physical performance and quality of life have been attributed to the influence of vitamin D on myocyte and neuron metabolism and function [13][14][15][16] . To the best of our knowledge, relatively few studies have focused on the effects of vitamin D and calcium supplementation on the physical performance and quality of life in Asian populations, especially in the Chinese population.…”
