The Roles of Affect Dysregulation and Deficient Affect in Youth Violence

Abstract: Children with high dysregulated affect experience a range of emotional and behavioral problems, including aggression, delinquency, and low levels of prosocial behavior. “…A total mean score was used with higher scores indicating higher levels of affect dysregulation or suppression. The threefactor structure of the ARC and its relationships with emotional and behavioral problems have been confirmed in previous research (Moretti & Craig, 2013;Penney & Moretti, 2010). Both the affect dysregulation and affect suppression scales have shown good reliability in the current sample (α = .83 and .74, respectively).…”

“…Items are scored on a 3-point scale ranging from "Not like my child" to "A lot like my child" and ask about experiences of affect in general. The three-factor structure of the ARC and its relationships with emotional and behavioral problems has been confirmed in previous research (Moretti & Craig, 2013;Penney & Moretti, 2010). Given its direct relevance to the deleterious impact of insecure attachment, the current study focused specifically on the affect dysregulation subscale (α = .89 and .90 for preand post-treatment, respectively).…”
