The roles of community seed banks in climate change adaption

Abstract: Although community level seed-saving initiatives have been around for about 30 years, until recently they have received little attention in the scientific literature on climate change adaptation and plant genetic resources. Based on research experiences from various countries, this article argues that community seed banks can enhance the resilience of farmers, in particular of communities and households most affected by climate change. Community seed banks can secure improved access to, and availability of, di… Show more

“…CSBs were successfully established all over the world in the last few decades, often supported and funded by NGOs. The main functions of CSBs include (a) conserving and reintroducing predominantly local germplasm, (b) providing easy access to seeds for members of the community, and (c) enhancing seed and food sovereignty [ 70 ]. If responsibly managed and supported, such CSBs can support the local community effectively and serve as a reliable seed source of locally important germplasm.…”

“…Our current study is the reflection of the findings of Vernooy et al, (2017), according to them the diversity of soil seed bank changes with the changing of climatic and edaphic factors and this type of demonstration was already discussed at different regions by the various researchers across the globe e.g. the Kiziba community of vegetation in terms of soil seed bank in Uganda is a very good example of the strategy of maximizing diversity to respond to climate change.…”

“…Community seed banks are locally-governed institutions whose core function is to maintain seeds for local use (Vernooy et al ., 2017). Community seed banks were established progressively in each study village with support from projects led by IER and Bioversity International funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).…”
