The genus
Desulfuribacillus
was originally described as a deep unaffiliated lineage in the order
Bacillales
. However, according to more recent phylogenomic analyses, it can be assigned into a separate class‐level taxon. It includes obligately anaerobic, Gram‐positive, spore‐forming bacteria capable of anaerobic respiration of thiosulfate, sulfur, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), arsenate, antimonate, nitrate, nitrite, selenate, and selenite. Members are low to moderately salt‐tolerant and alkaliphilic. They inhabit anaerobic sediments of soda lakes. The genus currently includes the type species
Desulfuribacillus alkaliarsenatis
and
Desulfuribacillus stibiiarsenatis
.
