The Roles of Tissue-Resident Memory T Cells in Lung Diseases

Abstract: The unique environment of the lungs is protected by complex immune interactions. Human lung tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM) have been shown to position at the pathogen entry points and play an essential role in fighting against viral and bacterial pathogens at the frontline through direct mechanisms and also by orchestrating the adaptive immune system through crosstalk. Recent evidence suggests that TRM cells also play a vital part in slowing down carcinogenesis and preventing the spread of solid tumors. … Show more

“…CXCR6, as tissue residence marker, is likely a better marker to define resident memory T cells (Trm), and the proportion of CCR6+CD4+ T cell also increased in the graft, suggesting that there are more memory CD4+ T cells in liver transplantation. Trm maintain immunity in diverse sites, and play an essential role in orchestrating the adaptive immune system through crosstalk ( 32 ). Lung transplant recipients exhibiting higher frequencies of persisting donor Trm experienced fewer adverse clinical events compared with recipients with low donor Trm persistence ( 33 ).…”

“…First, we examined post-vaccination lung infiltration of experienced memory T cells. These T RM cells are characterized by CD69 expression as well as CD103 expression in the CD8 compartment 37 . The levels of lung-resident CD69 + CD4 + T cells were not significantly different between i.n.…”

“…Trm plays an immunomodulatory role in several organs( 40 ). Trm also serves in the coordination of the adaptive immune system through crosstalk( 41 ). By annotating the different immune cell types in liver transplantation, we assessed the relative importance of different immune checkpoint molecules in human liver transplantation.…”
