“…Following the successful application of Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and coring to map the location of the western extent of the northern Claudian mole in previous years (Keay and Kay, 2018; Keay and Hay, 2017), the technique was used in spring 2019 to survey an area hypothesised as the location of the lighthouse of the Claudian harbour. The survey followed the same methodology, using a Wenner array varying between 26 m and 128 m depending upon the local topography.…”

“…In 2017 survey was undertaken at both sites using GPR to investigate a number of features that were recorded in the 2015 surveys, as well as a new area at Pitane. The 2015 gradiometry survey at Pitane had recorded a number of features across the site, with a concentration towards the northern end of the promontory (Keay, 2016) where the survey had indicated the potential location of a kiln, of particular importance as the site was the production centre for Eastern Sigillata C. The GPR survey, across an area of 12 m by 20 m with data collected every 0.25 m, indicated that the feature was at a shallow depth. The 2017 survey also completed a central area on the site occupied by a small woodland and modern buildings.…”

“…In recent years, the Portus Project has concentrated field research on the northern mole of the Claudian harbour at the Imperial port of Rome. Several seasons of geophysical prospection have been conducted in the area of Pesce Luna, to the west of Viale Coccia di Morto, in order to locate and study the western part of the northern mole (Keay and Kay, 2018). These surveys were supplemented by a series of environmental cores to investigate areas both inside and outside the manmade harbour as well as a core though the northern mole (Chapkanski et al, in press; Kay et al, 2019).…”

In addition, in 2018 a field school was conducted to the north of the Grandi Magazzini di Settimio Severo, and to the west of the Palazzo Imperiale to investigate the relationship between later structures and the projected edge of the Claudian basin (Keay et al, 2019).…”
