The Roots of Autism and ADHD Twin Study in Sweden (RATSS)

Abstract: Neurodevelopmental disorders affect a substantial minority of the general population. Their origins are still largely unknown, but a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors causing disturbances of the central nervous system's maturation and a variety of higher cognitive skills is presumed. Only limited research of rather small sample size and narrow scope has been conducted in neurodevelopmental disorders using a twin-differences design. “…In particular, contrasting the phenotypes of discordant and monozygotic twins enables control of genetic factors, providing a powerful strategy to identify disease-associated environmental factors, independent of underlying genomic sequence variation [271]. The Roots of Autism and ADHD Twin Study Sweden (RATSS) [272], a sub-study of the population-based Child and Adolescent Twin Study Sweden (CATSS) [273], is the largest collection of deeply clinically phenotyped autism twins. It primarily applies twin–cotwin analyses to identify environmental risks contributions to autism phenotypes on the behavioral and neurobiological level controlling for genetic and familial factors.…”

“…Twins (352 individuals) from the Roots of Autism and ADHD Twin Study in Sweden (RATSS; Bölte et al., ) were mainly recruited (~10% response rate) from the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden (CATSS; Anckarsäter et al., ). Both MZ and DZ twin pairs from CATSS were prioritized if differing by at least two points on the ASD or the ADHD subscale of the Autism‐Tics, ADHD and other Comorbidities inventory (A‐TAC), a parent telephone interview assessing ASD and comorbidities (Larson et al., ).…”
