The RT-Chair: a Novel Motion Simulator to Measure Vestibular Perception

Abstract: Vestibular perception is useful to maintain heading direction and successful spatial navigation. In this study, we present a novel equipment capable of delivering both rotational and translational movements, namely the RT-Chair. The system comprises two motors and it is controlled by the user via MATLAB. To validate the measurability of vestibular perception with the RT-chair, we ran a threshold measurement experiment with healthy participants. Our results show thresholds comparable to previous literature, thu… Show more

“…The experimental procedure was similar to the one used in our previous work (Zanchi et al, 2021). Participants were seated on the padded racing seat of the RT-Chair (Cuturi et al, 2020). Once they were comfortable, the experimenter explained the task and gave participants the headphones.…”

“…We administered motion stimuli using a 2-degrees-of-freedom motion platform, the Rotational-Translational Chair (RT-Chair, device internally developed by the Italian Institute of Technology, Fig. 1a; for details see Cuturi et al, 2020). In particular, the motion stimuli consisted of 3-s yaw rotations (0.33 Hz) along the earth-vertical axis, which followed a minimum jerk motion profile.…”

“…In this pilot study, a novel experimental procedure is presented, based on the joint use of two newly developed simulation devices. The first is a 2-Degrees-Of-Freedom motion platform, the Rotational-Translational Chair [10]; the second is an acoustic virtual reality tool, the 3D Tune-In Toolkit [11]. The combination of these tools allowed us to test how vestibular self-motion cues and auditory landmarks are combined.…”
