The Safety and Efficacy of 1-Monoeicosapentaenoin Isolated from the Trebouxiophyceae Micractinium on Anti-Wrinkle: A Split-Face Randomized, Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Clinical Study

Abstract: The skin aging process is governed by intrinsic and extrinsic factors causing skin wrinkles, sagging, and loosening. The 1-monoeicosapentaenoin (1-MEST) is a component isolated from Micractinium, a genus of microalgae (Chlorophyta, Trebouxiophyceae). However, the anti-wrinkle effects of 1-MEST are not yet known. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-wrinkle effects of 1-MEST in vitro and in clinical trials. The cytotoxicity of 1-MEST was investigated in vitro using the MTS assay in human epidermal keratinocyte… Show more

“…In comparison, in the placebo group, R1 remained unchanged, R3 decreased, and R2, R4 and R5 increased at 12 weeks compared to before use. A recent similar clinical study using a face cream containing 1‐Monoeicosapentaenoin isolated from the Trebouxiophyceae Micractinium for 12 weeks showed a similar decrease value with PASE in R1, R2 and R3, but R4 and R5 had a lower decrease rate [30]. Moreover, after 12 weeks of PASE cream use, there was a significant level of wrinkle improvement in all parameters compared to placebo use ( p < 0.05; Table 6).…”

“…(23,34) Premature skin aging as a result of photoaging is characterized by deep coarse wrinkles, mottled irregular hyperpigmentation, thin, lax, and leathery skin texture mainly in exposed areas such as the skin of the face, neck, and hands, accompanied by lentigines, telangiectasias, and sallowness. (17,18,59,60) Solar UVR consists of electromagnetic wavelengths between 100 and 400 nm that reach the terrestrial surface and has a direct effect on human health and terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, as well as material degradation. (61)(62)(63)(64) It is divided into three components, depending on its transmission capability in the atmosphere and its biological effects: UVA (315-400 nm) makes up most of the UVR received on the terrestrial surface; UVB (280-315 nm) which is partially absorbed into the atmosphere, and UVC (100-280 nm) which is completely absorbed by stratospheric ozone.…”
