The safety of obstetrical ultrasound: a review

Abstract: Ultrasound is a commonly employed imaging modality in obstetrics and is generally regarded as safe to the fetus. Current ultrasound technology, however, has significantly higher output potential than older machines used in most clinical studies, and the safety profile for the increasing use of Doppler, 3-dimensional (D) and 4-D ultrasound with modern machines is unknown. This article reviews the current status of ultrasound safety within obstetrics, including proposed mechanisms of harm, existing scientific an… Show more

“…The scanning time per visit was as short as possible (less than 20 minutes) and the thermal and mechanical indices were kept below one, in line with the international recommendations for safe scanning. [13][14][15] The 3D datasets obtained were stored and transformed to Cartesian (rectangular) volumes afterwards, to be transferred to the BARCO I-Space (Barco N.V., Kortrijk, Belgium) at the Department of Bioinformatics, Erasmus University Medical Centre, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This is a four-walled CAVE TM -like (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) virtual reality system, allowing depth perception and interaction with the projected images.…”

“…6 The social phenomena of increasing maternal age predisposing to abortion, general limitation of family size and heightened expectations of normal outcome have produced increased pressure on the obstetrician, thereby giving more importance to ultrasonography. :…”

“…To date there is no evidence of adverse effects of ultrasound examination in neonates. There have been reports of a mildly increased risk of delayed speech, left handedness in boys and intrauterine growth restriction after fetal exposure to ultrasound 18 . A recent systematic review found that ultrasonography during pregnancy was not associated with adverse perinatal or childhood outcome 19 .…”

“…The amount of energy absorbed depends on tissue type, duration of exposure and ultrasound mode or route. Doppler imaging, though, has higher output potential compared to standard B-mode imaging, because of its intensity and the small area of tissue being examined 18 . Therefore, keep the duration of exposure to a minimum, especially in Doppler imaging.…”
