The Salt Lake Systems and Their Associated Aeolian Features in the Semi‐arid Regions of Western Australia

Abstract: Wind action has modified relics of river systems which drained the southern and central parts of Western Australia. Dunes of both coarse crystalline and h e floury gypsum and lunettes of sand, silt, or clay size material are common near to the leeward margin of salt lakes. Further removed, materials, blown out from the lake areas as aggregates of clay, silt, and sand, are deposited as sheets which are medium-textured and have a high lime content. The latter deposits have been termed lake pamas.

“…Similar soils have been reported in other studies (Teakle, 1938;Mulcahy and Hingston, 1961;Stephens, 1961;Bettenay, 1962;Burvill, 1988), as have soils with ferricrete gravels overlying strongly alkaline subsoils, again with calcareous nodules (Teakle, 1938).…”

“…The illite may have formed authigenically in the playa floor or sub-surface brines. A similar proposal was made by Bettenay (1962), however, he reported dust as occurring in discrete layers, a situation that does not occur in the Cairlocup area, possibly because of the smaller area of the source playa compared to that at Merredin, where the source is several kilometres wide. Small additions of dust, without the formation of discrete layers, is consistent with observations elsewhere (Yaalon and Ganor, 1973;Tsoar and Pye, 1987).…”

“…On the downwind edges of many playas and pans material transported from the lake floor forms berms and low flats of gypsum, clay and sand (Bettenay, 1962). Gypsum deposits occur within inland saline playas and coastal barred basins, where brines are concentrated and evaporites formed (Jones, 1994).…”
