“…It is now 20 years since the San Diego definition of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) was proposed and Byard and Tan carried out a timely examination of the impact of this consensus statement. Their review of the literature showed that the definition has not been uniformly applied and that a diagnostic shift had occurred, with the term ‘undetermined’ being used in preference to a diagnosis of SIDS 7 . The authors point out that this will make it difficult to interpret conclusions related to SIDS research and accurately monitor trends in SIDS mortality.
