Abstract: Prokaryotic CRISPR-Cas immune systems detect and cleave foreign nucleic acids. In type III CRISPR-Cas systems, the Cas10 subunit of the activated recognition complex synthesizes cyclic oligoadenylates (cOAs), second messengers that activate downstream ancillary effector proteins.
