The Scientific Basis of Chinese Medicine and Cancer Care: A Western Medicine Perspective

Abstract: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may be integrated with conventional Western medicine to enhance the care of patients with cancer. Recent evidence confirms a scientific basis for the use of acupuncture, herbs, diet and energy therapies. We suggest a holistic care plan based on the concepts of biological response modification, enhancement of psycho-immunological function, better symptom control, and improvement of psycho-spiritual well-being. There is enough preliminary evidence to encourage good quality clin… Show more

“…In a review of the "scientific basis of Chinese medicine" as it pertains to cancer care, Sager and Wong emphasized the "modification of biological response to improve therapeutic gain" ( [29], p. 10). In energy psychology protocols that utilize acupoint tapping, the following sequence occurs:…”

“…The philosophical underpinnings of the model derive mainly from integrative oncology, with distinguishing contributions from tcm 18,20 and the discipline of nursing 11,12,16,[25][26][27][28][29] . The theoretical underpinnings come from systems theory: Von Bertalanffly's theory of biologically-based energy systems and the biofield hypothesis, the body-mind information network, and development 25,28,[30][31][32][33][34] .…”

“…Although the philosophy of integrative oncology is well described [10][11][12][13] , conceptual models in the literature tend to be lacking 12,[14][15][16] . A conceptual model describes the values, relevant concepts, scientific evidence, clinical approach, and theoretical underpinnings that direct clinical and research practice [17][18][19][20] .…”

“…In recent years, Chinese herbal medicine has been integrated with modern Western medicine to enhance the clinical benefits and alleviate the adverse effects [21]. Chinese herbal medicine can improve cancer therapy by triggering biological modification, enhancing the psycho-immunological function, and improving psycho-spiritual well-being [22]. Therefore, this study investigated the efficacy and safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine combining EGFR-TKIs therapy (EGFR-TKIs+TCM) in the treatment of late-stage lung cancer patients with EGFR mutations.…”
