The UK national evaluation of the development and impact of Early Intervention Services (the National EDEN studies): study rationale, design and baseline characteristics

Abstract: National EDEN is the largest cohort study of young people with psychosis receiving care under EIS. It will be able definitively to indicate whether this major investment in the United Kingdom in EI is achieving meaningful change for its users in practice and provide indications concerning who does well under this approach and who does not, and the long-term stability of any improvements.

“…We should not be too surprised by these findings since historical 22 and recent data 23 suggest that young people with psychosis do not engage well with out-patient services such as CMHTs and are often discharged as a result. Indeed, the evidence base for the effectiveness of CMHTs in managing schizophrenia was reviewed in recent National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines 36 concluding, 'Despite the fact that CMHTs remain the mainstay of community mental healthcare, there is surprisingly little evidence to show that they are an effective way of organising services.…”

“…Duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) was defined as the delay between the onset of psychosis and the onset of criteria treatment and was calculated using a robust strategy (for more information, see article by Birchwood et al 16 ). A dichotomous DUP variable was constructed representing short (0 = <6 months) and long (1 = >6 months) DUP.…”
