The second virial coefficients of gases and mixtures. Part 2.—Mixtures of carbon dioxide with nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, argon and hydrogen

Abstract: The second virial coefficients of equimolecular mixtures of carbon dioxide with nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, argon and hydrogen have been measured at 30°, 60" and 90" C. For all these mixtures the derived values of the interaction virial coefficient BIZ are not very different from those calculated using the empirical combining laws for the force constants in the Lennard-Jones potential, but are appreciably less dependent on temperature.I n calculating the coefficients of interaction between mixtures of n… Show more

“…In common with many reduced equations of state when applied to unlike-interaction terms it uses the mixing rules: FIGURE 1. “…This equation is readily extendable to mixtures using equations (9) to (11) (17) Brewer, (18) and by Cottrell et al (19) The values are plotted in figure 1 and extrapolation of this work indicates good agreement with the measurement of Brewer, agreement within experimental error with the measurement of Menon, and with the higher-temperature measurements of Cottrell et al Their measurement at 303.15 K deviates considerably but this is probably indicative of the experimental uncertainty.…”

“…The unlike-interaction B 12 values generated using equations (2), (6) and (7) The Tsonopoulos (13) modification of the Pitzer and Curl (14) equation has been reproduced often and widely used to predict second virial coefficients. In common with many reduced equations of state when applied to unlike-interaction terms it uses the mixing rules: In the published literature measurements of B 12 for (CO-CO 2 ) have been reported by Menon, (17) Brewer, (18) and by Cottrell et al (19) The values are plotted in figure 1 and extrapolation of this work indicates good agreement with the measurement of Brewer, agreement within experimental error with the measurement of Menon, and with the higher-temperature measurements of Cottrell et al Their measurement at 303.15 K deviates considerably but this is probably indicative of the experimental uncertainty.…”
