The Seismic Behaviour of Curtain Walls: An Analysis Based on Numerical Modelling

Abstract: The paper proposes a numerical model to estimate the structural behaviour of a stickbuilt glazed curtain wall system subjected to an imposed displacement of the supports in the plane of the wall. We discuss the role of the parameters that influence on the maximum inter-storey drift corresponding to the service limit state of the wall. The considered parameters are the dimensions of the glazed panel, the gap between the panel and the aluminium frame and the gap between the supports and the mullions. We discuss … Show more

“…Curtain wall system mockups are often dynamically tested involving instrumentation and sensors as the standard method for collecting performance data (Khoraskani 2015;Gorenc 2016). While extremely beneficial due to their precision, cost and availability of sensors can lead researchers to collect limited data, particularly with full-scale specimens (Bârnaure and Voiculescu 2013;Antolinc et al 2014). While there have been several studies on experimental racking performance of curtain wall systems (Broker et al 2012;Wang et al 2015;Lu et al 2016;Aiello et al 2018), due to the cost of full-scale testing, alternatives methods are of interest.…”

“…Memari et al [16] performed a pilot study to create finite element modeling formulations of glass curtain walls under in-plane dynamic loads and identified various levels of damage in the load-displacement curve acquired during an experimental test. Furthermore, some finite element models have been developed by several authors [16][17][18][19][20][21][22] in order to predict the general behaviour of glazed curtain wall systems and the drift at glass cracking and fall-out during seismic actions. The present work is intended to lay the basis to understand how to calculate the drift limits at the actual damage state of glass façade.…”

“…Antolinc et al (2014) investigated, by means of full-scale shake-table experiments, the seismic capacity of glass walls interacting with timber frames. Further research studies related to the in-plane shear resistance of steel-glass or timber-glass composite walls are discussed in Memari et al (2003), Krstevska et al (2013), Bârnaure and Voiculescu (2013) and Ber et al (2014).…”
