Background: The maxillary anterior teeth are important in achieving pleasing facial and dental esthetics. Among those, the central incisor has a key role in determining the esthetic as they are the most dominant and visible teeth during smile. Determining the proper size of these teeth is important but difficult in the absence of pre extraction records in edentulous condition. Aims and Objectives: This study was conducted to find a suitable guide in determining the length of the central incisor by correlating it with some independent facial structure like nose length in a small population of Chitwan district. Materials and Methods: The distance from the bridge of the nose to the base was compared to the length of the maxillary central incisor in 321 patients of both sexes between the age groups of 20–35 years. The actual length of the maxillary incisor was measured and also calculated by regression analysis to determine some fixed ratio. The calculated value by this ratio was compared to the actual measured value to find if the difference was significant. Results: The difference between the calculated distances and the actual measured distance was found to be 0.340 in males and 0.266 in females, which was statistically significant (P<0.001). Conclusion: The distance from the bridge of the nose to base of the nose may be used as a reference to estimate the length of the central incisor in the Nepalese population, although sample included subjects from the central Chitwan District of Nepal.

Purpose: To evaluate the reliability of the visibility of the central incisor & the canine for the cervico incisal positioning of anterior maxillary teeth related to age & sex while the upper lip was in repose in dentate patients & the development of rehabilitation recommendations for edentulous individuals with regard to the location of the maxillary incisal edge Methodology: 308 subjects [152 Males & 156 Females] belonging to the age of 30 to 59 years were selected using a simple stratified random technique. There were three age and sex groups: Group I was 30 to 39 years old, Group II was 40 to 49 years old, and Group III was 50 to 59 years old. The vertical distances (in mm) between the lower border of the upper lip and the right maxillary central incisal edge and canine tip were measured and recorded using adhesive tape marked with millimetres. A single examiner recorded all the measurements and the values were tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Men in Groups I and II had maxillary central incisor exposure ranging from +6 to -1mm, whereas males in Group III had exposure ranging from +5 to -2mm. There was an exposure range of +6 to -2 mm in females in Group I, +7 to -2 mm in Group II, and +5 to -2 mm in Group III for the central incisors. While the canine exposure in Group I and II and Group III ranged from +2 to -4mm in females, the exposure ranged from +3 to -3mm in men of all ages. In all groups, females had statistically significant (P0.05) more central incisor and canine exposure than men. Conclusions: The canine visibility was less variable in all the age groups and in both males and females in comparison to the central incisor. When restoring edentulous individuals, the average canine exposure dimension can be employed for cervico-incisal location of the anterior maxillary teeth.

As dificuldades para se determinar as posições dos dentes anteriores superiores são imensas 7,21 , visto que, as condições de reabsorção alveolar na maxila ocorre com maior intensidade na tábua óssea vestibular, ocasionando uma diminuição do seu diâmetro látero-lateral, em comparação com a mandíbula 3,9,18 , o quê, por si só, já seria um fator agravante para a estabilidade e, também, para a determinação correta das posições dos dentes anteriores superiores, pois a localização da crista óssea original dificilmente seria encontrada. Os métodos tradicionais, principalmente aqueles que se utilizam do posicionamento do lábio superior como referência para os incisivos superiores 3,30 , são extremamente prejudicados pela atrofia dos lábios, em virtude da falta de suporte adequada que seria dado pelos dentes naturais e osso alveolar na região vestibular.…”

Objetivando auxiliar na determinação do relacionamento esquelético maxilo mandibular no plano horizontal e da crista óssea original do rebordo alveolar inferior anterior, em pacientes edentados totais bi-maxilares, apresenta-se um método radiográfico baseado em traçados cefalométricos. A amostra foi composta por 64 pacientes do ambulatório de prótese total da Universidade de Santo Amaro. Para estes pacientes foram confeccionadas próteses totais e tomadas duas telerradiografias, uma em posição de repouso mandibular e outra em oclusão. Para a evidenciação radiográfica, foram montados, nos planos de oclusão duplicados dos originais, os incisivos centrais superior e inferior direito e introduziu-se em seus longos eixos, um fio ortodôntico de 0,5mm de espessura. Na radiografia em posição de oclusão, foram feitos traçados cefalométricos que permitiram diagnosticar o relacionamento maxilo mandibular e a posição da crista óssea original. Comparando-se esse diagnóstico com o clínico, pôde-se notar diferenças em 11 casos, quanto ao relacionamento maxilo mandibular e 23, quanto à posição dos dentes sobre a crista óssea. Desses 23 casos (35,93% da amostra), 18 (28,12%), tiveram discrepância na montagem dos dentes para posterior e 5 (7,81%), para anterior. Esses resultados indicam a necessidade de mais estudos sobre métodos de diagnóstico, para minimizar as possibilidades de erros.
