The self-morningness/eveningness (Self-ME): An extremely concise and totally subjective assessment of diurnal preference

Abstract: The assessment of diurnal preference, or the preferred timing of sleep and activity, is generally based on comprehensive questionnaires such as the Horne-Östberg (HÖ). The aim of the present study was to assess the reliability of a subject's self-classification as extremely morning (Self-MM), more morning than evening (Self-M), more evening than morning (Self-E) or extremely evening (Self-EE) type, based on the last question of the HÖ (Self-ME). A convenience sample of 461 subjects [23.8 ± 4.7 years; 322 femal… Show more

“…Individuals in between are labelled neither types (NT)38. Recent studies discussed the possibility of using only one single item for assessment of chronotype3036. This refers to item 9 of the CSM, where people have to assess whether they are a morning or evening person.…”

“…Interestingly, item 19, which requires responders to self-rate themselves as evening, morning, or intermediate subtypes, loaded on Factor 1, suggesting that people tended to determine their own chronotypes depending on their efficiency in dissipation of sleep pressure. Turco et al (2015) assessed the reliability of item 19 of the MEQ by comparing the results with the full questionnaire, with the time of subjective sleepiness during a waking day and also with real-life sleep timing variables. They found that healthy adults could describe their diurnal preference based on this item.…”

“…The Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) (Italian adaptation) ( Turco et al, 2015 ) is a 9-graded scale to evaluate the subjective level of sleepiness. Considering that 1 and 9 indicate a state of minimal and maximal sleepiness, the participant must report the level that best reflects his/her psychophysical state in the 5 min before administering the questionnaire.…”
