The Sensitization of TiO2 Thin Film by Ag Nanoparticles for the Improvement of Photocatalytic Efficiency

Abstract: The formation of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of TiO2 (AgNP/TiO2) to enhance photocatalytic efficiency was studied. The Ag nanoparticles (AgNP) size, form, and distribution dependence on the initial thickness of Ag thin films, annealing temperature, and time were analyzed. The optimal annealing temperature of 400 °C and annealing time of 60 min were chosen to form AgNP from the initial Ag thin films with a thickness of 5, 7.5, and 10 nm. The formation of AgNP was done on amorphous TiO2 (a-TiO2), which cryst… Show more

“…TiO 2 is considered an ideal semiconductor photocatalyst material due to its high catalytic activity, non-toxicity to the human body, and strong oxidizing and reducing properties [4]. At present, metal doping [5,6] has been discovered to adjust the energy band gap of TiO 2 to different degrees, non-metal doping [7], metal deposition [8], and other methods to broaden the light response range of TiO 2 film. When a certain number of metal ions are doped into TiO 2 , electron trapping centers are formed, which promote the migration of electrons.…”

“…The following materials were considered for plasmonic nanoparticles: Au [16,17]; Ag [18]; Pt [19], Al [20], TiN [21]. Varying the material of plasmonic particles, their size and shape, is a key tool for tuning the spectral properties of a photoelectrode [22][23][24].…”

“…TiO 2 rutile phase has a tetragonal structure with six atoms per unit cell. TiO 2 anatase phase has a tetragonal structure the same as rutile; however, in anatase, the distortion of TiO 6 octahedron is slightly larger [12,13]. In a rutile structure, each octahedron is coordinated with ten neighbors, while in anatase, it is in contact with eight.…”
