The Sentinel-3 Mission: Overview and status

Abstract: The series of Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) Sentinel satellites will continue and extend the European heritage of ENVISAT to provide data to numerous user communities. Sentinel-3 is being developed to support GMES Ocean and global Land monitoring services. Two Sentinel-3 satellites are in development with a first launch in 2014 and the second satellite expected approximately 18 months after the first. This paper provides an overview of the Sentinel-3 Mission.

“…The along-track resolution is significantly improved by an order magnitude (from several kilometers to a few hundred meters), which is particularly useful to capture the small scale features. Cryosat-2 is the first satellite to demonstrate the DDA approach, and Sentinel-3 satellites operate in DDA mode all the time [46,47]. China and other countries are also planning to launch altimeters of this type.…”

“…All the three Swarm satellites are equipped with identical POD instruments including GNSS receiver, Laser Retro-Reflector (LRR), and accelerometer. Sentinel-3 is a multi-instrument mission to measure sea-surface topography, sea-and land-surface temperature, ocean color, and land color with high accuracy and reliability [49]. Sentinel-3A was launched on 16 February 2016, followed Sentinel-3B on 25 April 2018.…”

“…For instance, the topography instruments SRAL and MWR need to change their mode depending upon the geographic location they are flying over, while the optical instruments SLSTR and OLCI have different constraints when operating during the "day" or "night" part of the orbit, due to data budgets. An overview of the Sentinel-3 mission can be found in Ref [2].…”
