The seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori and nitric oxide in acne rosacea

Abstract: The results of the study indicate that the inflammatory species NO, which has been hypothesized to be associated with H. pylori, has no role in the inflammatory mechanism of acne rosacea.

“…Several reports showed seropositivity to H. pylori in rosacea individuals [68]. Eradication therapy for gastric H. pylori infection showed preferable outcome for rosacea symptoms though it is not clear if the improve of rosacea is due to H. pylori eradication [69-71].…”

“…Eradication therapy for gastric H. pylori infection showed preferable outcome for rosacea symptoms though it is not clear if the improve of rosacea is due to H. pylori eradication [69-71]. H. pylori produces ROS [72-74] and rosacea individuals showed higher ROS including NO (nitric oxide) in plasma than controls [68, 75]. H. pylori induce cytokine release through TLR2 and TLR4 in gastric epithelial cells [76, 77].…”

“…Eradication of H. pylori has been occasionally associated with an improvement of rosacea symptoms [42, 43, 44]. An increased prevalence of anti- H.-pylori antibodies was found in rosacea patients [44, 45, 46]. However, subsequent studies have clearly demonstrated that there is no significant difference in the seroprevalence of H. pylori infection among rosacea patients and healthy subjects [1, 47].…”

“…Helicobacter pylori (HP) is the primary cause of gastritis and a major contributor to peptic ulcer disease. Recently, there have been several investigations suggesting a possible etiologic role for HP in rosacea 2–8 . Some of these investigations have shown that the prevalence of HP infection in patients with rosacea is higher than that of control subjects 4–6 or average values, 7 and others have reported that HP eradication treatment reduces the severity of rosacea 2,3,6,8 …”

“…How HP is related to rosacea remains unclear; however, it has been shown that HP can increase serum or tissue levels of nitrous oxide (NO), 9–11 a free radical, which has been found to be important in a number of different physiological processes in the skin, including vasodilatation, inflammation, and immunomodulation 12,13 . Thus, it has been postulated that NO produced by HP might cause the flushing and erythema associated with rosacea, 14 or have a pathogenic role in rosacea inflammation 5 . This has not yet been proven, however.…”
