The Sexual Consent Scale–Revised: Development, Reliability, and Preliminary Validity

Abstract: The Sexual Consent Scale-Revised (SCS-R) measures an individual's beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors with respect to how sexual consent should be and is negotiated between sexual partners. This study extends previous research on sexual consent by revising a scale using the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991, 2001, 2005) as its theoretical foundation. The psychometric properties of the SCS-R were established using factor analysis, construct validity tests, as well as internal consistency and test-retest rel… Show more

“…In contrast to previous research focused on examining consent in the context of sexual assault (Hall, 1998;Hickman & Muehlenhard, 1999;Humphreys & Brousseau, 2010;Jozkowski, Peterson et al, 2013;Jozkowski & Peterson, 2012), the current study examined sexual consent in relation to participants' perceptions of the quality of their most recent engagement in sexual intercourse. It is notable that the two internal consent factors to emerge as significant predictors of quality of sexual intercourse for both women and men were comfort/safety and agreement/wantedness.…”

“…For example, Humphreys and Brousseau (2010) and Humphreys and Herold (2007) developed the Sexual Consent Scale-Revised to assess college students' attitudes and beliefs regarding how sexual consent should be and is negotiated between sexual partners. Utilizing Muehlenhard's (1995Muehlenhard's ( /1996 framework for conceptualizing sexual consent as a mental act and a verbal/behavioral act, Jozkowski (2011) developed the Internal Consent Scale (ICS; mental act) and the External Consent Scale (ECS; verbal/behavioral act) to assess college students' feelings of willingness/consent to engage in sexual activity (internal consent) as well as the verbal and behavioral cues they utilize to communicate consent to sex (external consent) at their most recent sexual event.…”

“…El sexo anal es un caso paradigmático, porque requiere siempre permiso expreso (Humphreys, 2007). Por otro lado, el grado de involucramiento sexual y emocional de una pareja (la duración de una relación) permite, teóricamente, percibir las intenciones sexuales con mayor claridad, aceptación y consenso (Humphreys, 2004;Humphreys & Brousseau, 2010).…”

“…Earlier studies specifically focused on sexual consent in mental retardation (Kennedy, 1999;Kennedy & Niederbuhl, 2001;Sundram & Stavis, 1994) and others more recently provided a self-report measure for sexual consent in non-clinical settings (Humphreys & Brousseau, 2009;Humphreys & Herold, 2007). Sexual consent criteria have not yet been tested on psychiatric samples.…”
