The Short- and Long-Run Hotel Demand in Switzerland: A Weighted Macroeconomic Approach

Abstract: This study develops a vector error correction model of hotel demand to incorporate both the short-run demand fluctuations and the long-run tourism growth. We distinguish between endogenous and exogenous variables in model development to advance previous tourism demand modeling. In addition, we develop a weighting scheme to account for the importance of explanatory economic variables that are pertinent to source markets of a destination to increase model accuracy. With an analysis of the Swiss hotel data from t… Show more

“…As can be seen, the normalisation on β cannot be made on the RPH t , while the RPH t should be excluded, as suggested by the misspecification test and Π matrix. Similar findings have been made by Bianchi and Chen (2020). They did not find that long-term cycles are time-varying for Switzerland.…”

“…Scholars have made an extensive effort to analyze the determinants of international tourism demand (Assaf & Li, 2021; Bianchi & Chen, 2020; Dogru et al, 2017; Liu et al, 2021; Martins et al, 2017; Oh & Ditton, 2005; Ongan et al, 2017; Song et al, 2010). However, despite the extensive research on tourism demand modeling, the previous literature provides conflicting prescriptions and motivations regarding the construction of proxies, the definition of variables, and so on.…”

“…The second strand relates to tourism demand studies. Extensive efforts have been made in tourism demand research to analyze determinants, such as economic, political and ecological factors, that generally foster international tourism demand (Bianchi & Chen, 2020; Cheung & Saha, 2015; Cho, 2010; Li et al, 2018; Liu et al, 2021; Martins et al, 2017; Saha & Yap, 2015; Tang, 2018). These studies treat tourism as a homogenous industry, disregarding the fact that the sub‐sectors may respond differently to the same events due to their distinct characteristics and may have varying effects on the tourism and economic development.…”
