The Short-Run Residential Demand for Natural Gas

Abstract: Effective and efficient energy conservation policy requires accurate and comprehensive estimates of residential energy demand pa- rameters. These parameter estimates are among the most important inputs into informed policy decisions. In turn, accurate estimation of energy demand parameters requires realistic modeling of the consumer's demand behavior, detailed information on energy consumption, and careful treatment of any econometric problems created by the model and data base.

“…This type of study often includes an extended set of explanatory variables providing a richer description of the durable stock and other characteristics that are particularly important for the demand for energy. There are numerou.s examples including Barnes et al (1982), Branch (1993), Baker & Blundell (1991), Baker et al (1989), Dubin & Henson (1988), Dubin et al (1986), Garbacz (1983Garbacz ( , 1985, Green (1987), Green et al (1986), Haas et al (1998:1, Herriges & King (1994, Klein (1988), Morss & Small (1989), Parti & Pan:i (1980, Poyer &Williams (1993), andReilly &Shankle (1988).…”

“…In 1981 Beierlein et al [23] analyzed electricity and natural gas demand for the residential, commercial and industrial sectors of the northeastern United States. Based on Consumer Expenditure Survey, Barnes et al [24] studied the short-run demand for natural gas. In 1983, Liu [25] estimated the own-price and cross-price elasticities of natural gas demand in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors in the USA.…”

“…Major studies of demand for natural gas can be found in Taylor (1977), Griffin (1979), Barnes, Gillingham, and Hagemann (1982), Blattenberger, Taylor, andRennhack (1983), andAl-Sahlawi (1991), among others. Taylor (1977) first surveyed price and income elasticities of demand for major types of energy.…”

“…Using the 1972-73 Consumer Expenditure Survey of over 10,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census, Barnes, Gillingham, and Hagemann (1982) studied the demand for natural gas in the short run. Variables considered were income, the marginal price of natural gas, the rate structure premium, demographic variables, and a vector of appliance-specific factors.…”
