The side effects of phototherapy for neonatal jaundice: what do we know? What should we do?

Abstract: Neonatal phototherapy (NNPT), a noninvasive, easily available therapy, has been widely used for the treatment of neonatal jaundice for more than half a century. Its efficiency in decreasing plasma bilirubin concentration is well documented, and NNPT leads to greatly reduced exchange transfusion rates for neonates with hyperbilirubinemia. It is generally accepted that the side effects of NNPT are not serious and seem to be well controlled. This review will focus on these possible side effects as well as the app… Show more

“…However, after correcting for congenital and chromosomal abnormalities, the associations were no longer statistically significant [17,18]. Additionally, previous studies could not find an association between phototherapy and skin cancer [16,19]. Phototherapy does seem to be associated with the development of allergic diseases [20].…”

“…Phototherapy is generally considered a safe procedure and reports of significant toxicity are exceptionally rare and mostly limited to case reports [10,16]. Recently, two studies were published on a possible link between phototherapy and development of cancer.…”

“…Adverse effects such as water loss, skin rash, and retinal damage were not serious and preventable [15]. Although unresolved, an association between neonatal phototherapy and skin cancer/other cancer was reported [8,9].…”

“…Untreated severe unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia is potentially neurotoxic. 4,5 Hypocalcemia is one of the lesser known but potential adverse effect of phototherapy. Neonatal hypocalcemia is defined as total serum calcium concentration of <7 mg/dl.…”
