The significance of continental derivation of the Proterozoic Mahanid Formation, southeastern Arabian Shield

Abstract: The Mahanid Formation is a quartzo-feldspathic meta-sedimentary unit exposed in the southeastern part of the Arabian shield. Detritus was derived from a continental landmass located to the southeast. Erosional products were deposited in an adjacent marginal basin which existed from middle to late Proterozoic time. The Mahanid Formation is correlated with other formations in the eastern shield area, but differs from meta-sedimentary units in the western part of the Arabian shield.
