The Significance of Short Latency in Mesothelioma for Attribution of Causation: Report of a Case with Predisposing Germline Mutations and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Malignant mesothelioma is a tumour of the serosal membranes, related to asbestos exposure. Median latency is in the order of 40 years in various registries, but small numbers of cases with shorter latencies have long been reported and often dismissed as unrelated to asbestos exposure. However, emerging data regarding the significance of inherited mutations leading to a predisposition to mesothelioma suggest that the causative effect of asbestos may be associated with shorter latencies in a subset of patients. … Show more

“…presentation. [1][2][3] MPM patients have a poor prognosis: 5-year survival rates of 5%-10% are reported with standard chemotherapy. 4 5 Addition of bevacizumab to firstline chemotherapy improved overall survival (OS) by approximately 2 months with manageable adverse events (AEs), while tumor-treating fields (TTF, non-invasive delivery of alternating electric fields to tumors) in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy demonstrated activity in a phase 2 study of epithelioid MPM and was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.…”
