The Simple Virtual Environment Library: An Extensible Framework for Building VE Applications

Abstract: As virtual environment (VE) technology becomes accessible to (and affordable for) an ever-widening audience of users, the demand for VE applications will increase. Tools that assist and facilitate the development of these applications, therefore, will also be in demand. To support our efforts in quickly designing and implementing VE applications, we have developed the Simple Virtual Environment (SVE) library. In this article, we describe the characteristics of the library that support the development of both s… Show more

“…In most of the known collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) like NPSNET [16], MASSIVE [12], Bamboo [31], DIVE [10], RAVEL [14], AVOCADO [11] and Urbi et Orbi [9], the simultaneous manipulation of the same object by multiple users is avoided. In these systems, the object receives a single command that is chosen from among many simultaneous commands applied to the object.…”

“…In this work, the VE is composed of a set of geometric objects rendered using the Simple Virtual Environment (SVE) library [14]. The geometric data that define the VE are replicated on each machine taking part in the collaboration, in order to reduce network traffic.…”

“…Many excellent products exist, such as the CAVElib (VRCO, 2002), dVise (PTC Corporation, 2002), WorldToolKit (Sense8, 2002), Vega (MultiGen-Paradigm, 2002), MR Toolkit (White, 2002), AVOCADO (Tramberend, 1999), SVE (Kessler, Bowman, & Hodges, 2000), and RAVEL (Kessler, Hodges, & Ahamad, 1998), but none meet our needs because it is not clear that they are free, either in the sense of cost or of redistribution.…”

“…We used an HMD even though the task could have been done using a standard monitor because we wanted to simulate as realistically as possible the use of these menu systems in an immersive VE. The test environment was developed using the Simple Virtual Environment library [21].…”
