“…While the framework of “between colonizers” is specifically formulated to understand Hong Kong, Shih’s framework of the “Sinophone” is intended to critique China’s sub-imperial oppression of all sinophone cultures: “Sinophone studies— conceived as the study of Sinitic-language cultures on the margins of geopolitical nation-states and their hegemonic productions—locates its objects of attention at the conjuncture of China’s internal colonialism and Sinophone communities everywhere immigrants from China have settled” (Shih, 2011: 710). Shih and others have utilized the framework to analyze Hong Kong culture (Shih, 2008; A Wong, 2018; Yue, 2016). Like Chow, Shih adopts the core insight of the sub-imperialism perspective—she emphasizes that some local societies experience cultural oppression by both global imperialist powers and regional sub-imperial powers: “If the critical operation of Sinophone studies involves a trenchant critique of China-centrism, it equally involves a critique of Eurocentrism and other centrisms, such as Malay-centrism in Malaysia.…”
