Abstract:Skeletal muscle contains lipids inside or outside of the muscle cells, namely intramyocellular and extramyocellular lipids (IMCL and EMCL, respectively). Accumulation of excessive IMCL becomes a cause of insulin resistance; on the other hand, IMCL is important substrate for the endurance exercise such as cycling. This bipolar relationship is called "athlete paradox". Muscle lipids increase with aging; however, the relationship of IMCL and EMCL with muscle endurance and strength performances in older individual… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
