The small city in the urban system: complex pathways of growth and decline

Abstract: To paraphrase an old saying attributed, probably erroneously, to Abraham Lincoln, God must love small cities, because he (or she) made so many of them. By whatever reasonable definition, they vastly outnumber large cities in almost every country and contain significant shares of each nation's population. While Germany has three cities of over one million population, and 96 between 100,000 and 1 million, it has 1518 cities between 10,000 and 100,000, which contain 42 percent of the country's population. In much… Show more

“…This has been attributed to their ability to capitalize on the spatial advantages afforded by their proximity to larger metropolitan centers, while also offering sought-after amenities due to their own embeddedness within regional networks [60][61][62]. Many small cities are successfully leveraging these advantages to become regional centers for employment opportunities or other positive contributing factors [63].…”

“…Current literature focuses primarily on mega-cities (12% of the global population), and very few studies consider small cities (less than 300,000 inhabitants) despite accounting for 42% of the world's population (Lamb et al 2019). This study aims to represent this underrepresented population (Bell and Jayne 2009, Musterd and Kovacs 2013, Grossmann and Mallach 2021 by applying innovative methods to the small European city (50,000-100,000) (Dijkstra and Poelman 2012) of Cerdanyola de Vallès, Spain (population 57,217) (IDESCAT 2022) by analyzing 1,100 answered surveys regarding respondents' social perception and beliefs of rooftop strategies, and their WTP and WTI in Cerdanyola del Vallès (now referred to as Cerdanyola). The study area is described below, along with methods of analysis in the methodology, a detailed analysis in the results, the discussion which includes limitations and recommendations for future research, followed by the conclusion.…”

“…The relative heterogeneity of small cities (see Amin and Graham, 1997; Bell and Jayne, 2009), however, makes them difficult to study as a group. Typically, analyses of smaller urban areas have focused on comparatively focused economic topics such as their innovative potential (Salder and Bryson, 2019), approaches to immigration (Rice and Kalafsky, 2020; Kim and Bae, 2021), or their decline (Grossmann and Mallach, 2021). Relatively little attention has been paid to their global reach and connectivity as a group.…”
