The Smart Detection of Ship Severe Roll Motions and Decision-Making for Evasive Actions

Abstract: This paper presents a numerical model for the smart detection of synchronous and parametric roll resonance of a ship. The model implements manoeuvring equations superimposed onto ship dynamics in waves. It also features suited autopilot and rudder actuator models, aiming at a fair depiction of the control delay. The developed method is able to identify and distinguish between synchronous and parametric roll resonance, based on the estimation of encounter wave period from ship motions. Therefore, it could be us… Show more

“…Differently from [47], implemented in FORTRAN, the model adopted herein is developed and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink [49,50]. Similar to [47,51,52], it allows for the estimation of ship dynamic instabilities and maneuvering simulations in irregular waves with a fair level of accuracy.…”

“…Bearing in mind the discussed limitations, such an approach currently seems to remain the best achievable option. However, the need for further development 130 and practical testing of the proposed solutions is indisputable. The very concept of stability criteria is based on measuring physical phenomena and confronting them with experience-based thresholds.…”

“…Acanfora M et al proposed a numerical model of synchronous and parametric roll resonance intelligent detection of ships for the severe roll motion of ships. In the face of maritime threats, different evading actions will be simulated and compared according to the change of course and speed, and finally the course will be changed [10] . Song L et al proposed an emergency collision avoidance algorithm for USV based on motion ability database for the dynamic obstacle avoidance of USV during the task, and the effectiveness of the algorithm was demonstrated by simulating the emergency avoidance experiment [11] .…”
