The Social Construction of Validity in Estimates of US Crude Oil Reserves

Abstract: The resource estimates of M. King Hubbert, and the method he used to generate these estimates, are described. When Hubbert made his first estimate it reflected the consensus of opinion within the industry. The conclusions he drew about the future of the US oil industry, however, contradicted the conventional wisdom within both industry and government. His estimates were criticized and rejected, and a number of markedly higher estimates soon appeared. In 1974, the political economy of the oil industry changed, … Show more

“…They compel acceptance, at least provisional acceptance, and the most well-designed and well-implemented research programs will have no impact if they are not understood to have produced accurate and useful information (see Bowden, 1985). However, the definitions of validity used by various scientists, audiences, clients, and subjects differ; while this is not an unusual phenomenon in science, it is pervasive in applied social science research.…”

“…Hubbert who predicted that US production would peak in 1970, closely matching actual peak production in 1971 (Bowden, 1985). In 1974 he also suggested that global oil production would peak in 1995 which proved to be inaccurate (Demming, 2003).…”

“…Peak oil is the point at which the global output of conventional oil reaches its maximum level and subsequently flow rates decrease (Bowden, 1985). This is when roughly half the world supply of oil has been produced and subsequent output falls.…”

“…For Gavin Bridge, resources are really cultural categories "into which societies place those components of the non-human world that are considered useful or valuable in some way" (Bridge 2009(Bridge :1219. Scholars continue to highlight aspects of this argument, that resources and resource estimations are cultural and social before they are natural and physical (Bowden 1985;Tsing 2000;Hughes 2017;Kneas 2017). In the context of broader theories and debates about materiality, scholars have also examined the diverse properties and agencies of specific natural resources (Bennett 2010;Kaup 2008).…”
