The Societal Readiness Thinking Tool: A Practical Resource for Maturing the Societal Readiness of Research Projects

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce the Societal Readiness (SR) Thinking Tool to aid researchers and innovators in developing research projects with greater responsiveness to societal values, needs, and expectations. The need for societally-focused approaches to research and innovation—complementary to Technology Readiness (TR) frameworks—is presented. Insights from responsible research and innovation (RRI) concepts and practice, organized across critical stages of project-life cycles are discussed with reference to t… Show more

“…Further research ideally could be performed from an intersectional perspective that explores the intersections of various social categories such as culture, social economic circumstances, rural or urban living and sexual orientation [ 142 ]. At the same time, in order to implement social innovations, an assessment of the so-called Societal Readiness Level is needed [ 143 ].…”

“…Moreover, the RePEAT questions focus on the researcher, rather than engaging research partners to build feminist and ethical relationships. Similarly, the SR Thinking tool is an online resource supporting researchers in “anticipating and reflecting on social and ethical dimensions of research” (Bernstein et al, 2022: 2). This interactive tool implements reflection by asking researchers to answer questions around responsibility, partnership, societal change, community engagement, and relationship-building (New Horizon, 2019).…”

“…They encourage researchers, innovators, funders, and science policy makers to raise questions on people whose voices and interests should be considered in the design and development process (inclusion); on the underlying goals, motivations, assumptions and worldviews that guide activities (reflexivity); and on the ways to respond to the knowledge gained through such reflection (sensitivity). Another, policy-based or input-based approach to RRI suggests pillars or "key components" that should be considered in research and development -six distinct keys (public engagement, open access, science education, gender, ethics, and governance) (Bernstein et al, 2022).…”
