“…Iurii Shevel'ov offered an instructive suggestion that "the NKVD considered [any] teacher a Ukrainian nationalist who, having completed a lecture in the Ukrainian language, continued to speak Ukrainian with his students after the lecture" (Shevel'ov 779). Bykovets' perfectly fit this description but he was not a member of any nationalist organization, and archival documents recently discovered in various sectoral SBU and Ukrainian state archives demonstrate that the cases that were given special code names by GPU/NKVD operatives, such as OUN, UVO and others, were fabricated by the secret police (Shkandrij and Bertelsen 2013). He was an active participant of Ukrainization, and he, like many other Ukrainian writers, was committed to the nation-building project.…”
