The sox gene Dichaete is expressed in local interneurons and functions in development of the Drosophila adult olfactory circuit

Abstract: In insects, the primary sites of integration for olfactory sensory input are the glomeruli in the antennal lobes. Here, axons of olfactory receptor neurons synapse with dendrites of the projection neurons that relay olfactory input to higher brain centers, such as the mushroom bodies and lateral horn. Interactions between olfactory receptor neurons and projection neurons are modulated by excitatory and inhibitory input from a group of local interneurons. While significant insight has been gleaned into the diff… Show more

“…The odd paired (opa) protein is important during embryonic segmentation, midgut formation and adult head morphogenesis 22 . The Dichaete (D) has important role in many developmental processes like neurogenesis, hindgut development, segmentation, and proper adult structure formation [23][24][25] . The cluster 11 with negative peak at the zoea I stage do not have any signi cantly expressed TFs or enrichment processes.…”

“…Although research to reveal the development and function of LNs has just begun, the contribution of LNs to PN dendrites targeting has been recently suggested (Melnattur et al, 2013). In the Dichaete mutant brain, PN dendrites target different or ectopic glomeruli.…”

“…Dichaete functions in the development of the CNS by regulating numerous genes ( 141 – 143 ). In the adult fly brain, dichaete is expressed in glia and neurons of the olfactory circuit but there is no data on memory formation at this time ( 144 ).…”
