The spatial dimensions of immobility in France

Abstract: In travel surveys, immobility is often approached as a technical issue that needs to be dealt with in order to measure mobility more accurately. By covering mobility patterns over a full week, the 2008 French Travel Survey allows immobility to be analysed other than as a marginal and random phenomenon. For working days alone, 28.8% of the adults in the survey had experienced one or more immobility episodes. By considering the intensity of immobility, and by introducing latent variables into Structural Equation… Show more

“…This effect might have been caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as shopping enjoyment significantly decreased during the pandemic ( Shen et al, 2022 ). We found that those living within five miles of the grocery store tended to prefer in-store shopping, confirming the efficiency theory that shopping accessibility is negatively associated with e-shopping ( Motte-Baumvol et al, 2017 , Zhen et al, 2018 ). Although cost and time consciousness were tested, cost consciousness did not show significant effects, while factor analysis did not identify “time consciousness” as a factor.…”

“…An opposite phenomenon (underrepresentation) occurs with the lower-income classes. To avoid bias in the estimates, sample weights were applied to the observations, a procedure adopted in similar studies (Motte-Baumvol and Bonin, 2018).…”

“…However, whether volitional or not, not traveling at all during the travel diary period is referred to as "immobility" in the literature [28]. Researchers have demonstrated the importance of exploring immobility patterns for daily travel, incorporating sociodemographic and residential environmental variables [29,30]. Purpose choice is referred to as "activity type choice," which is the core of the activity-based scheduling process.…”
