“…Studies have identified Axis I psychiatric conditions in at least 90% of adolescent suicide victims, indicating that these individuals commonly exhibit comorbid psychiatric disorders (Brown et al, 1991;Brent et al, 1994). In addition, Cluster B and C personality disorders (Brent et al, 1994), as well as a myriad of intra-and extrapersonal factors, such as poor self-esteem, loneliness (De Wilde et al, 1993), previous suicide attempts (Pfeffer et al, 1994b), physical and sexual abuse (Bayatpour et al, 1992), loss of a family member (Marttunen et al, 1994), and parental psychopathology and suicidal behavior (Pfeffer et al, 1994a) have been identified as a characteristic of suicidal youth.…”

“…/AJPH.2009 acceptance is linked to increased suicidal behavior and planning. [33][34][35] Sources of Strength 36 is built on a universal school-based suicide prevention approach designed to build socioecological protective influences across a full student population. Youth opinion leaders from diverse social cliques, including at-risk adolescents, are trained to change the norms and behaviors of their peers by conducting well-defined messaging activities with adult mentoring.…”

“…Explorations of locus of control as it relates to suicide has sought to illuminate the difference in risk between individuals who tend to view their behaviors as impacting the world around them (i.e., internal orientation), and those who view their behaviors as having little or no related consequence in the world (i.e., external orientation). Although not without confounding findings (e.g., De Wilde, Kienhorst, Diekstra, & Wolters, 1993), most studies have supported a relationship between an external locus of control and increased suicide risk in adolescents (Beautrais, Joyce, & Mulder, 1999;Nelson & Singg, 1998;Pearce & Martin, 1993). Assessing the strength and direction of this relationship-as well as gender differences and the generalizability of previous findings to more general adolescent samples-remain as important ongoing research tasks.…”
