The Spectrum of Learning and Teaching: The Impact of a Fourth‐Year Anatomy Course on Medical Student Knowledge and Confidence

Abstract: There is growing demand from accrediting agencies for improved basic science integration into fourth‐year medical curricula and inculcation of medical students with teaching skills. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a fourth‐year medical school elective course focused on teaching gross anatomy on anatomical knowledge and teaching confidence. Fourth‐year medical student “teacher” participants' gross anatomy knowledge was assessed before and after the course. Students rated their … Show more

“…16 One way some medical schools have addressed the issue is through "peer-teaching" initiatives for senior students to teach select topics in short sessions to underclassmen, often during Anatomy. 17,18 A review of the literature revealed 19 studies (from nearly 400) that addressed the topic of peer teaching and showed the same model of senior students teaching peers or lowerclassmen, nearly exclusively in medicine. 19 The opportunity and need for training the student as the teacher are particularly apparent in allied health professions, with great potential for interprofessional applications, as well as flipped classroom teaching modalities.…”

“…However, no study has explored the correlation between discipline‐based curriculum teaching time and knowledge retention (Bergman et al, 2014). In fact, others have reported that in curricula with fewer teaching hours, high level of retention was achieved by constant review of anatomy knowledge during clinical rotation (McBride and Drake, 2016; Lufler et al, 2020). One study reported a similar level of knowledge gain in students attending traditional and integrated curricula, respectively (Arantes et al, 2020).…”

“…However, the maintenance of higher theoretical knowledge over time will enhance dental sculptures. In this context, reinforcing anatomical knowledge throughout the semesters of the dental course could contribute to the retention of anatomy knowledge presented at the beginning of the undergraduate health course (de Azevedo et al, 2018; Lufler et al, 2020).…”
