The Spectrum of Mesenchymal Skin Neoplasms Reflected by the New WHO Classification

Abstract: Mesenchymal tumors are a heterogeneous group of tumors often arising in the skin and soft tissue. The tumors have been reclassified by the WHO in 2002. Benign mesenchymal tumors are about a hundred times more frequent than malignant mesenchymal tumors. Clinically, mesenchymal tumors often present as skin-colored nodes. Overall, elderly persons are more affected than younger individuals. The etiology is often unknown, sometimes there is an association with insults such as radiation, scars, or lymphedematous or … Show more

“…Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma is extremely rare in the head and neck region, which has been reported in parotid gland, mandible and eyelid, and only accounts for about 3% of all undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas. [ 15 ] Clinically, UPS-T has no specific signs and presents with painless large mass and can be accompanied by cough, dyspnea, and dysphagia in some patients. [ 16 ] ATC is an extremely rare malignancy of thyroid, which most commonly presents with a similar clinical manifestation to UPS-T. [ 16 ] Therefore, it is difficult to differentiate UPS-T from ATC by clinical features.…”

“…In the head and neck, undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma is extremely rare and accounts for only about 3% of all undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas. [7] After the 2002 WHO classification, there has been few articles published about a primary undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the eyelid. [13] Hence, our report represents an extremely rare case of a rapidly progressing primary undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the eyelid after 2002 and 2013 WHO classification.…”
