The Split Ejaculate of the Boar: Contributions of the Epididymides and Seminal Vesicles

Abstract: The EP components were mainly secreted in the first three or four fractions, but occasionally from fraction four onwards. Those of VS were emitted during the entire ejaculation, the maximum occurring in the sperm-rich fraction or the immediately succeeding fraction. The first fractions were devoid of VS components in only one case. The majority of the EP proteins could be identified electrophoretically in the sperm-rich fractions, but the protein patterns in the other fractions were similar to those of VS. “…Furthermore, Zn is included in the WHO manual as an indicator of prostatic function [WHO 2010] and low levels of Zn have been found in SP of infertile men [Chia et al 2000;Colagar et al 2009]. In boars, some changes in mineral composition are related to season and heat stress [Larsson and Einarsson 1984;Murase et al 2007] Although several studies are available on these enzymes and minerals in boar semen, their association with semen quality was not clearly demonstrated [Boursnell et al 1973;Ciereszko and Strzezek 1989;Einarsson et al 1970;Lavon and Boursnell 1975;Strzezek et al 1995;Strzezek et al 1998;Wysocki and Strzezek 2006]. Moreover, many of these studies are rather dated.…”

“…Caudal spermatozoa are sequentially released during ejaculation and mixed in the urethra with secretions of the various accessory sex glands to form the ejaculate (Marberger 1974;Lavon and Boursnell 1975). The ejaculate is constituted of two parts: spermatozoa and SP, the latter building its volume (95%, Mann and Lutwak-Mann 1981).…”
