Lake-wide zooplankton surveys are critical for documenting and understanding food web responses to ecosystem change. Surveys in 2003 and 2008 during the binational intensive field year in Lake Ontario found that offshore epilimnetic crustacean zooplankton declined by a factor of 12 (density) and factor of 5 (biomass) in the summer with smaller declines in the fall. These declines coincided with an increase in abundance of Bythotrephes and are likely the result of direct predation by, or behavioral responses to this invasive invertebrate predator. Whole water column zooplankton density also declined from 2003 to 2008 in the summer and fall (factor of 4), but biomass only declined in the fall (factor of 2). The decline in biomass was less than the decline in density because the average size of individual zooplankton increased. This was due to changes in the zooplankton community composition from a cyclopoid/ bosminid dominated community in 2003 to a calanoid dominated community in 2008. The increase in calanoid copepods was primarily due to the larger species Limnocalanus macrurus and Leptodiaptomus sicilis. These cold water species were found in and below the thermocline associated with a deep chlorophyll layer. In 2008, most of the zooplankton biomass resided in or below the thermocline during the day. Increased importance of copepods in deeper, colder water may favor Cisco and Rainbow Smelt over Alewife because these species are better adapted to cold temperatures than Alewife.

Despite growing recognition of the importance of ecosystem services and the economic and ecological harm caused by invasive species, linkages between invasions, changes in ecosystem functioning, and in turn, provisioning of ecosystem services remain poorly documented and poorly understood. We evaluate the economic impacts of an invasion that cascaded through a food web to cause substantial declines in water clarity, a valued ecosystem service. The predatory zooplankton, the spiny water flea (Bythotrephes longimanus), invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes in the 1980s and has subsequently undergone secondary spread to inland lakes, including Lake Mendota (Wisconsin), in 2009. In Lake Mendota, Bythotrephes has reached unparalleled densities compared with in other lakes, decreasing biomass of the grazer Daphnia pulicaria and causing a decline in water clarity of nearly 1 m. Large zooplankton has an important role for the functioning of the ecosystem in many lakes. Most are predatory, which makes them both competitors as well as food for many planktivorous fish species. In general, it has been elusive to measure the abundance of this group of zooplankton with traditional sampling methods, particularly in large volumes of water. In this study we tested the potential and adequacy of multi-frequency hydroacoustics as a method to map the spatial patterns in abundance of the large zooplankton in Lake V€ anern, Lake V€ attern and Lake M€ alaren. In addition, we used a plankton net to groundtruth biovolume estimates vertically, and a Tucker trawl for the horizontal distribution. Two frequencies were used to separate the acoustic backscattering from fish, mysids and plankton. The main target species were Leptodora kindtii, Bythotrephes longimanus and Limnocalanus macrurus.The plankton communities were very heterogeneous both within and among the lakes. Lake V€ anern and Lake M€ alaren were dominated by Leptodora, whereas Lake V€ attern was dominated by Limnocalanus. Bottom depth at the sample site was the most important community structuring factor.Our results indicate that the biomass of large predatory zooplankton is comparably high and in most surveyed areas even higher than the biomass of planktivorous fish. Consequently, they are more important for the dynamics of lake food webs than previously assumed. Using multi-frequency hydroacoustics show promising results and with some alterations to the sampling design this would be a valuable addition to the traditional zooplankton monitoring in large lakes.
