The Stability of Intercalated Sericite by Cetyl Trimethylammonium Ion under Different Conditions and the Preparation of Sericite/Polymer Nanocomposites

Abstract: Layered silicates are suitable for use as fillers in nanocomposites based on their particular features, such as large aspect ratio, easy availability, and chemical resistance. Among them, sericite is distinguished for its higher aspect ratio, higher resilience, and ultraviolet shielding and absorption. Previously, sericite was structure-modified and intercalated by CTAB to expand its interlayer space. The intercalated sericite seems promising for use in the fabrication of polymer/sericite composites or pillare… Show more

“…As the acidification and oxygen plasma treatment was combined in method D, the resulting MNs have a thickness of ∼5 nm due to the increased hydroxyl content (figures 3(d 2 ) and 4(d)). The method E reported by Liang et al was chosen as a reference [40]. The obtained MNs have a thickness of 9−15 nm after thermal modification, acid activation, sodium modification and CTAB intercalation.…”

“…Previous work by Liang et al (2013Liang et al ( , 2019 [28,29] has illustrated the advantageous properties of sericite, for example, whilst many have studied the use of high aspect ratio kaolin, montmorillonite, talc, etc. [30] showing the specific advantages of these materials.…”

“…Sericite is distinguished for its higher aspect ratio, higher resilience, and ultraviolet shielding and absorption. In this view, Liang et al [14] studied the stability of the sericite intercalated by CTAB by changing different washing solvents, different temperatures, ultrasonic cleaning, and different solution conditions. Sericite/polymer nano-composites were produced with the stable intercalated sericite, and demonstrated excellent properties compared with pure epoxy resin.…”
