The State of Research on Africa in Business and Management: Insights From a Systematic Review of Key International Journals

Abstract: Aiming at a better understanding of the extent to which Africa-focused research has helped develop context-bound, context-specific, and context-free knowledge, the authors present the findings from a literature review of journal articles with an African context. “…The creation of the African Journal of Business Ethics in 2005, and compilations of works like the virtual special issue on advancing business ethics research on Africa in the Journal of Business Ethics (Muthuri et al 2017), and this volume are all important steps in this direction. “…The ABS 2018 sample (30 journals) was selected so that our systematic review captured how social enterprise and networks were being examined and discussed in top entrepreneurship and small business management journals. The FT50 journals (50 journals) were included in the search reflecting their significant use globally in business and management schools for promotion and tenure decisions, as well as for the awarding of research time and/or incentives (after Kolk and Rivera-Santos, 2018). These journals are some of the leading outlets in their respective sub-fields, they are often where key debates are occurring, and making it important capture how, if at all, social and networks are being considered within them.…”

“…The emergence of multinational enterprises (MNEs) from less‐developed and emerging economies and their increasing participation in the global economy (Liou, Chao, & Ellstrand, ) necessitate a shift in research focus toward nontraditional contexts in home and host country (Kolk & Rivera‐Santos, ). Nontraditional settings, especially less‐developed economies in Sub‐Saharan Africa, provide opportunities for management research to reevaluate both HRM theories and policy design.…”

“…Nontraditional settings, especially less‐developed economies in Sub‐Saharan Africa, provide opportunities for management research to reevaluate both HRM theories and policy design. The contribution of context‐specific conditions to management and international business (IB) research has become an important subject of debate within the international management and international HRM domains (Kolk & Rivera‐Santos, ). The relevance of nontraditional contexts may implicitly or explicitly complement the understanding of current management theories and also stimulate the emergence of new theories.…”
