The state of the art in breast imaging using the Twente Photoacoustic Mammoscope: results from 31 measurements on malignancies

Abstract: ObjectivesPhotoacoustic mammography is potentially an ideal technique, however, the amount of patient data is limited. To further our understanding of the in vivo performance of the method and to guide further research and development, we imaged 33 breast malignancies using the research system – the Twente Photoacoustic Mammoscope (PAM).MethodsThirty-one patients participated in this retrospective, observational study. The study and informed consent procedure were approved by the local ethics committee. PAM us… Show more

“…sO 2 can then be measured, which is an important indicator of tumor metabolism and therapeutic response. Oncologic applications of PAT to date include breast cancer (9)(10)(11)(12)(13), prostate cancer (14,15), skin cancer (16,17), thyroid cancer (18), and ovarian cancer (19)(20)(21)(22).…”

“…Entropy maximization reconstruction thus tends to be physically relevant and more accurate in resolving the structures (as demonstrated with numerical simulation, experimental phantoms and in-vivo case) in an imaged sample. The developed methodology has the potential to emerge as a suitable data processing tool for OA imaging, and specifically benefiting pre-clinical biomedical [50] and translational imaging [51].…”

“…It can provide both functional and structural information for pre-clinical and clinical applications, including human breast imaging [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. In PACT, the image contrast arises from the absorption of light, typically in the form of a short laser pulse, by molecules within the sample.…”
