The status of citrus Huanglongbing in China

Abstract: The Chinese citrus industry is facing an unprecedented challenge from citrus Huanglongbing (HLB). As no resistant commercial citrus varieties and no curable chemicals are available so far, it is still the "no. 1 threat" to Chinese citrus industry. This review article outlines the current status of the disease prevalence and measures recommended and adopted for the prevention and control of HLB in China. Research progress in many areas are highlighted together with the challenges and future prospects of HLB in … Show more

“…Major obstacles in citrus tree development include weather conditions and disease epidemics. In particular, following its emergence, citrus Huanglongbing (HLB) disease has become the primary threat to citrus production in majority of the main global citrusproducing areas, including Brazil, the USA, and China [6][7][8].…”

“…Within the plant, the bacterium is restricted to the phloem and cannot be cultured in artificial media. Moreover, there are no effective tools to control the spread of the insect vector and no commercial citrus varieties resistant to HLB have been developed to date, which further hamper disease control [6][7][8].…”

“…In Brazil, citrus canker and also citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC) contribute to impact citrus production due to yield losses and increase in productions costs (Coletta Filho et al 2020). Finally, greening or HLB (huanglongbing) is currently the main threat to citrus production in the main citrus producing areas around the world including Brazil, USA, and China (Bassanezi et al 2020;Zhou 2020;Graham et al 2020).…”

“…HLB has spread rapidly and severely affected the healthy development of sustainable citrus production. To make matters worse, HLB almost destroyed Florida’s citrus industry, and most citrus-producing regions of the world also suffered a massive blow [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for HLB [ 1 , 3 ].…”

“…To make matters worse, HLB almost destroyed Florida’s citrus industry, and most citrus-producing regions of the world also suffered a massive blow [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for HLB [ 1 , 3 ]. The ACP, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), is a notorious pest of citrus plants belonging to the Rutaceae family [ 5 ], whose entire developmental stages (except for the egg stage) require it feeding on the sap of citrus trees, resulting in stunted shoots and withered branches, and even dieback [ 6 , 7 ].…”
