The status of hard coral communities at Kosrae, Micronesia

Abstract: Coral diversity is increasingly threatened by multiple anthropogenic and climate stressors. Threatened species assessments play an important role in guiding conservation action for management and mitigation of losses, but to provide accurate assessments it is necessary to collect quantitative data at an appropriate scale. When assessed at a global scale the level of threat facing corals in the tropical western Pacific Ocean is perceived to be low. However, whether the global threat classifications reflect the … Show more

“…The reefs surveyed in Micronesia all harbored generally high abundances of coral. Kosrae reefs hosted the highest abundances (up to 77% coverage) of coral, consistent with previous observations (Richards 2015). More generally across the islands and atolls, coral and macroalgal coverages were in line with previous observations on other Micronesian reefs including Pohnpei, Chuuk, andYap Islands (Abraham et al 2004, Goldberg et al 2008).…”

“…Survey of corals diversity on Gaspar Strait, Bangka Island, and the western part of Bangka Island by various methods, i.e., line transect, belt transect, roving, were recorded 98, 89, 71 corals species, respectively (Siringoringo et al, 2006;Hadi, 2013, 2015). Other numerous surveys with more applied methods also found more species (Richards and Rosser, 2012;Waheed and Hoeksema, 2014;Richards, 2015). A similar study on Scleractinian corals with the addition of museum collections examination also recorded more corals species (Richards et al, 2014).…”
