The Strategies of Pathogen-Oriented Therapy on Circumventing Antimicrobial Resistance

Abstract: The emerging antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses serious threats to the global public health. Conventional antibiotics have been eclipsed in combating with drug-resistant bacteria. Moreover, the developing and deploying of novel antimicrobial drugs have trudged, as few new antibiotics are being developed over time and even fewer of them can hit the market. Alternative therapeutic strategies to resolve the AMR crisis are urgently required. Pathogen-oriented therapy (POT) springs up as a promising approach in c… Show more

“…There are various kinds of pathogenic bacteria posing severe threats to human health, and the fight against the infections caused by these bacteria has become one of the most important biomedical directions for many decades [ 50 ]. Although the development of antibiotics has relieved the unfavorable condition to a considerable extent, we have not conquered bacterial infections fundamentally, especially in the situation where the bacteria have the staggering capability of mutation to adapt to extremely harsh environments resulting in the transformation to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.…”

“…Pathogen-directed therapy, as the name suggests, interacts directly with pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) to interrupt their intrusion, survival, and proliferation ( Shang et al, 2020 ). Anti-infective drugs, as the representative, combine directly with the components of pathogens, causing death of pathogens or inhibiting their replication.…”

“…The spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) including multidrug-resistant superbugs and biofilm establishment has emerged as one of the top ten public health threats around the world [1]. Promoted by the long-term overuse or misuse of antibiotics against bacterial infection, bacterial pathogens are evolving and becoming more and more lethal [2,3]. Currently, new drug development is still the most effective way for combating AMR.…”
